    Industrial Applications

Cost reduction through the improvement of items used in the production process. The main area is the increase in performance in cutting tools, dies, guillotine and cropping blades, punches, etc. Not only do you save through the increased ‘in service’ life but also the reduction in downtime and setup costs. If you have wear in moving parts, that can effect the service life of your production process, these items may well respond to cryogenic processing and so save costs.

Press work often involves using expensive tooling that can govern the profitability of a job. By applying a cryogenic treatment after the normal heat treatment but before final fitting you can see a dramatic increase in the life of the tooling. this is because this application makes good use of the two biggest effects offered by cryogenics, stress relief and increased wear properties (see science). You can apply cryogenics to an existing tooling when you refurbish, have your normal heat treatment done after any welding or major work but before final fitting.

The treatment of cutting tools with the cryogenic process can significantly increase tool life and so dramatically reduce the tooling costs to your business. Not only do you save on the direct cost of tooling but you also reduce ‘set up’ costs as you are able to produce more parts per tool, so reducing the downtime associated with a change in tooling.

Many of the tool steels used for metal working are also used for woodworking so many of the benefits transfer to this industry sector as well.

The requirements of the print and packaging industry also mean that a wide range of materials used are the same so the advantages can also be taken advantage of.

Types of materials that typically show benefit from the process:-

Carbide drills and inserts - TiN, TiCN PVD coated and un-coated

HSS ‘M’ and ‘D’ range both coated and un-coated as cutting tools and punches/dies

Some ‘ASP’ materials show increase in life, as do some applications for hot and cold forge working.
