Wear Test of Maraging Steel (Laser Sintered)
A disc of material was produced to fit the ‘pin on disc’ test unit (aprox 75mm diameter).
A set load was then applied through a pin of pre defined hardness for a given distance at a given speed. Hardness levels taken.
The test disc was then cryogenically treated and the test process repeated.

When comparing the two pictures it is clear that the wear scar is much reduced and that the debris after treatment is a much finer particle.
We measured the size and depth of the scar with an optical profile tool and the following graphs produced:-
